Review: Urban Terror

I’m cheap

I don’t have a lot of money so I tend to only buy games if I can get them for a bargain. so I like to check out free games. But not free games like ftp cash grab mobile games. I’m talking about Urban Terror, a free first person shooter which is a total conversion mod of Quake 3 Arena. It was made by Frozen Sand and in their words is a “Hollywood Tactical Shooter”. On the heading of the website it says “Fun over realism”. I feel that phrase really fits this game. And I’m talking FREE. No cash shop, no in game purchases, no bullshit.

Let’s Get Started

There’s no registration required to download. After you Install and start up the game for the first time, you get to enter a nickname, so the other players know who they’re referring to when they call you a noob and say your cheating, or make derogatory comments about your mother. Nahh I’m kidding, that’s only what the 14 year olds do in call of duty.

Next you pick a server to connect to. There are a few options to narrow the list down more specifically for what you want to play. After you wade through all the empty servers, some with ridiculously awesome names, and you find one to connect to, the game plops you right into the action. I’d recommend finding a safe place to check out your Guns and gear.

There is a decent variety of guns to choose from and they all feel good to fire. You always get a knife and a pistol and you get to choose a main and secondary gun. As for gear there are a few different items you can add on to your character like a kevlar helmet and vest, grenades, a few backpacks and some other stuff. The combination of gear that you choose changes the gameplay by a small amount. For example if you equip the kevlar vest you can take more shots before dying. It’s all personal preference.

The game has the typical modes like team deathmatch, free for all, capture the flag, survivor and a few others. I mostly play free for all but survivor is pretty fun.

At the bottom left of the screen there is a little guy that represents your health and what part of your body you’ve been shot. When you get shot and are still alive you’ll start bleeding. Your health will slowly go down unless you bandage the wound. There’s no regenerating health here.

The graphics are pretty dated but the gameplay more than makes up for it. The benefit of the dated graphics is that you’ll always get a solid frame rate and it will run on almost any modern computer… even your potato.

Now for the negatives:

I’ve run into a few different bugs and glitches over the years. Once every player kept respawning at the same spot and then dying. It was an endless cycle of  spawning and then dying. I thought it was hilarious. There are no official servers, only ones ran by the community and that makes it tough to find a good one sometimes. A lot of them are empty which is too bad. More people need to play this game.

Summary

I don’t really know what it is about Urban Terror but I love it a lot. Its lots of fun, its designed well and its easy to pick up and play and best of all.. doesn’t cost a dime. Go play it!

  1. I’ve come back to this game after 4-5 years off and found no one in Australia playing it (I am from Australia). Pings to the US make me less competitive. So am very sad.
